Octave presented unique design challenges to Morel's R&D team. The aim was to employ architectural elements in the cabinet design in order to create a speaker that is simple in its design yet sophisticated in its look. We selected Corian™, a polymer from DuPont, due to its outstanding acoustic properties and smooth, sleek appearance. We had to understand how to use the Corian material to integrate a contemporary urbane design with basic acoustical principles.

The development of a modular concept utilizing Corian (in numerous color options) as our premium cabinet material helped us create the design concept for our Octave Octwin 5.2 speaker. Our research revealed that ½" (12.5 mm) thick Corian panels share the same acoustic properties as ¾" (19 mm) thick MDF panels. By employing Corian, internal bracing can be kept to a minimum, thereby enabling smaller cabinet design. Corian's low resonance point, weight and other properties greatly improved Octave's bass response, resulting in controlled and accurate bass. To reduce standing waves and to create a tighter and smoother mid-bass, the cabinet is coated inside with a special sound-absorbing material.

The result- a system that has received industry acclaim and has attracted a great deal of attention from audiophiles who seek powerful performance coupled with daring design.
